My Vision
Being a teacher has always been my dream. It has been my dream to be that amazing influence in a student's life as my teachers were to me. One big part of my dream and vision of becoming a teacher is having the most amazing classroom. When students first walk into my classroom, I want their eyes to open wide and get excited to learn and be excited to be in my room. I picture a huge map of the world covering one whole wall in my room. I want it to be easily accessible so students can run up to it when needed and point out to the place we are talking about that day in class. I want the map to be made of a material that can be written on and erased easy, so students can write all over it, so they can put stars next to important places, or even draw the trails of the settlers or the ways armies walked to battle. The students would sit at tables that were grouped into fours, so they can interact with each other. The tables would be on the outside border of the room so there is a big open space in the middle for kids to get up and walk around and interact with each other and also for me to stand in the middle of the room and walk around while I am teaching. I would love to use bright colors and depending on what part of history I am teaching have the room decorated for that period. If I were teaching about the Civil War, I would have one side of the room set for the Union and one side set for the Confederacy and eventually get the kids split up on either side and have a fun portrayal of the Civil War.
I want my classroom to feel very welcoming and exciting! Many students can find history or social studies boring because it isn't known to be an interactive class like science where they are conducting experiments. My history classroom would, however, be very interactive! They would be "conducting experiments" almost every day. One of my favorite history teachers always had music of the period we were studying playing as we came in and got settled and did our jump start activity of the day and would love to implement that into my classroom. I am a very organized person and would have to keep that at the top of mind in my classroom and would make sure the students knew where everything was and how I have everything organized and would ask for some suggestions on how they would want it to be organized for them.
I want my students always to feel they can come to me with any concerns, questions or suggestions they might have. I want them to feel comfortable with raising their hands during class and ask questions or even comment on what is being taught and offer their thoughts on the topic. I want them to use their brains and think what might they have done or how they feel about what is happening. I want the students to be respectful of others and their thoughts and questions and will make sure to make clear expectations of that at the beginning of the year. My style of teaching will be very energetic and interactive. I find it hard to sit still and will never be one of those teachers who teaches from her desk or just stands in the front of the room at the board and lectures. I want to be walking around seeing everyones faces making sure everyone is staying intrigued and attentive with the lesson. There will be lots of classroom activities, discussions, and group projects. I want to be teacher everyone hopes they get and requests for future semesters as I did many of mine.
My Goals
Most of my goals have always remained the same with adding some here and there. My first major goal is to get into that classroom and start influencing my student's lives. While completing my first couple years in the classroom, I would like to obtain my masters from Boise State University to broaden my knowledge and improve myself as a teacher and educator of young minds. Part of that masters might be to receive a master in administration to be able to become a Principal and influence many more kids and teachers. It has always been a dream of mine to teach at my alma mater Manchester High School in Midlothian, Virginia. I would love to go back and teach history there as well as coach the dance team that I was a part of when I was in high school. While there I would also like to head some of the departments or clubs like student council that I was in when I was there as a student. If that dream doesn't happen and life keeps me here in Boise or takes me to a different part of the world I would be happy to teach anywhere, but it would be awesome to teach at an inner-city school or school with troubled students. I would like the opportunity to work with these students because most of them are not given much of a chance, it's many times a teacher's last choice to teach in schools like that and those kids deserve a good teacher just as much as anyone does.
I want my students to enjoy learning, and I want to be a major part of why they do. I want them to know that learning is not hard and they can all do it. I want to be able to give every single one of my students an A because of their hard work and retaining the lessons and knowledge. I want to be able to see that my students are enjoying my teaching and the way that I do and will always ask for comments or suggestions on how I can make the lessons better for them or how they might enjoy them better. I want all my students to have fun during classroom discussions and creating projects. I would like for them to breeze through assessments because they had fun learning and retained the knowledge.
Some personal goals that I have would be to get married and start a family. I hope to have two or three kids who I can share the love of history and teaching with them. I would love to be able to take my kids to all the amazing historical places that my father and I would visit often. Washington D.C., the battlefields of the Civil War, Jamestown, and Colonial Williamsburg are at the top of my list of places I can't wait to take my future family because they were such amazing experiences for me. In my future, I just hope to be the amazing teacher that all the students wish they had or get super excited when they see my name as their history teacher on their schedule when they receive it. I want to be a great influence in every student's life I get the pleasure of educating.
